Fall 2021

Please note: The Office of the Registrar has resumed normal operations; the following information reflects historical operational and policy updates due to COVID-19.

See the University of Iowa COVID-19 website for the most up to date information.

The following information is relevant for fall 2021 courses, and will be updated as new information becomes available.

Fall 2021 courses published to MyUI on March 1. We will continue to process new course and course change requests in the order they are received. As a reminder, when a course is sent through for revisions, the course is temporarily unavailable for students to use while building schedules in MyUI.

Despite shift in campus policy on May 20, 2021, it was determined that all lectures with opt enrollment 150 or greater which were previously adjusted to Web delivery mode will remain as listed due to ongoing registration and first-year orientation commitments.

We will resume the previous practice and policy that any section scheduled to be held as fully online/web Delivery Mode should be created as an EX* DOE section. However, lectures that will be manually adjusted by the Office of the Registrar, will retain their standard section number as an Academic Unit Course Management Type.

Planned return for pre-pandemic operations at pre-COVID capacity for in-person meetings, classes and aerosol generating activities to standard use in spaces without enhanced filtration.

Please direct questions about fall 2021 course offerings to Classroom Scheduling.

Fall 2021 Course Offerings and Delivery Mode Information

If a change to your current delivery mode is needed, consultation and approval from your Associate Dean is required.  This should occur in very rare instances as registration and first-year orientation are well underway and student notification will be required, if approved.  Please submit an email which includes the Associate Dean’s authorization to Char Maher at the Office of the Registrar.

For consistency of the fall 2021 academic session, it is requested that any section that uses a Hybrid delivery mode choose between the two options of Hybrid without Rotation or Hybrid with Rotation.  Please note these two modes will eventually expire after the start of the fall session to make way for a new mode effective for spring 2022.  If exception to the Hybrid mode option is desired, please email Renee Houser at the Office of the Registrar to discuss future action.

Summer 2021

Summer 2021 Overview

Please review the following information which pertains to summer 2021 courses. In many cases, instructions and additional information will be provided further down the page.

Courses with optimum enrollment of 50 or more will be converted programmatically in MAUI to World Wide Web.

Courses with optimum enrollment of 49 or below will prioritized for face-to-face instruction, with the focus remaining on first year student courses.

Time/Location changes and Delivery Mode changes will be requested via the Revise Offering Form.

While planning for your summer offerings, we ask that any questions regarding the appropriateness or changes of instructional modalities be directed to your Associate Dean(s) for feedback. No formalized exception process will exist in this compressed resubmission/scheduling timeframe. The Associate Deans will be able to generate a report to continuously review sections submitted into workflow as oversight. Any concern identified during this review period should be addressed before final approval of the section is granted by the Office of the Registrar.

Delivery Modes and Definitions

Learning Types (Synchronous, Asynchronous and Blended) were removed after fall 2020 and new Delivery Modes have been added. These changes will make the process more straightforward for departments and should be easier to understand when viewing courses in MyUI. Course delivery information will be achieved through the Delivery Mode chosen, Time/Location information, and MyUI Registration Information.

Only one Delivery Mode should be chosen per course section. Click the name of the Delivery Mode below for written and video course setup instructions.

Face to Face - This course will be held in person in a University Classroom or instructional space.

Hybrid with Student Rotation - A flexible course where students will rotate on a set schedule between face to face and virtual instruction. It is expected that 50% of the instruction will be in person. Time/location area MUST have at least two time/location lines: one denoting on campus meeting pattern, and one with the same (synchronous) meeting pattern with World Wide Web.

Hybrid without Student Rotation - A flexible course where students will have both face to face and virtual instruction. Time/location area MUST have at least two time/location lines: one denoting on campus meeting pattern and another with either synchronous or asynchronous World Wide Web.

Web - This course will be taught entirely online. Asynchronous Web is indicated by using ARR/World Wide Web in the time/location field. Synchronous Web is indicated by listing a specific day/time meeting pattern with World Wide Web. A Web course can be both synchronous and asynchronous, which would require two time/location lines.

How to Modify Existing On-Campus Sections to Reflect Online Instruction

If an approved on-campus section will be offered online, instead of creating a new EX section, departments should submit a revise offering form for the existing section. On the revise offering form, please provide updated meeting pattern information, referring to the guidelines below. This will allow us to provide updated time/location information to students without having to change student enrollments. This process will also release the classroom/instructional space and building currently listed in MAUI/MyUI. For more information, see the Office of the Registrar COVID-19 Instructions.

Synchronous Plan

Departments enter the class time/day of the group interactive meeting and location World Wide Web.

  • If classroom/instructional space is required for live synchronous group meeting events or lecture recordings, please contact the appropriate building scheduler to track classroom usage as done for COVID-19.

Registration Information Field in MAUI/MyUI

Departments are reminded that of the Registration Information field is a good way to convey any supplemental information to their enrolled and prospective students. We strongly encourage departments to provide students with as much information as possible so they can make informed decisions.

For Example:  "In addition to the three "live" zoom sessions on May 19th, June 2nd, and June 11th, there will be asynchronous assignments to be complete on ICON equivalent to 1 credit hour.

Summer 2020

Summer 2020 Course Offering Instructions

Following the Friday, March 27, announcement that the University of Iowa is moving the summer 4-week, 6-week I, and 12-week subsessions to online-only modality, we wanted to share additional, important information related to the summer session that will impact your department and/or students.

Update:  On Friday, May 1, the University of Iowa announced that the summer 6-week II and 8-week subsessions will be moving to online-only modality.

Overall Session and Subsession Dates

All subsessions: 4-week, 6-week I, 6-week II, 8-week, and 12-week will be online only.

Course Offerings

All approved course offerings will remain in MAUI as listed. Departments must review their summer 4-week, 6-week I, 6-week II, 8-week and 12-week section offerings for the new online-only directive to determine instructional feasibility. It is important that students understand if the section will be offered and which modality the course will follow to make necessary decisions related to their registration.
