Fall 2020 - Registration change process
Use MyUI to process drops and withdrawals through the end of the fall session.
Once other changes (adds, section changes, hours changes) are not allowed in MyUI go to Changes in Registration - MyUI Closed to find the required permissions/authorizations needed for your change. Then follow the steps below to process your change using email.
Compose one email using your uiowa email account and copy everyone you need permissions from. This may include: Advisor, Instructor, Dean, Athletics and ISSS.
Dean's contact info by college can be found here if needed.
In the subject of the email please include your name and ID or hawk ID.
In the body of the email please include:
- The type of change you would like to make (add, section change, hours change)
- Your name,
- University ID number or hawk ID,
- Course name
- Full course number including section(s)
- Credit hours
- Instructor name if you are adding an Independent Study
Ask that everyone please reply ALL with their permissions/approvals to keep them in one email.
Add your signature and send the email.
Once you receive replies from everyone and if they have ALL approved your request and given permission then forward your email(s) as one to firstname.lastname@example.org for processing. If you have separate emails with permissions please attach them all in one before you send.

Changes are typically processed the day they are received unless it is after 4:00 pm, then they will be processed the next business day. If you are facing a deadline be sure your request with all required permissions is sent before 4:30 on the deadline day. It will be the student's responsibility to verify in MyUI that the change has been processed correctly.

Faculty/Staff may submit an email with permissions on a student’s behalf in place of a Change of Registration form to email@example.com. The change will be processed if it contains all required information and permissions.
Change of registration forms will still be accepted but we encourage you to email those as a pdf attachment to firstname.lastname@example.org, fax to 319 335-1999. campus mail to UI Service Center – 2700 UCC or mail to UI Service Center 2700 UCC, Iowa City, IA 52242
If you do wish to drop-in to the UI Service Center with your form, please know that a mask and social distancing are required. You may have to wait for entrance due to space limitations so it is best to call or email to see if we can assist you in another way. Our lobby is closed each day from 12:30 – 1:00 pm

Students may change their registration before a session begins using MyUI. Log in, click on Registration and choose the session. Each of your courses will have a change/drop link to the far right. Drop will remove the course. You should use Change if you need to switch sections or change the number of credit hours you are registered for. You may also add courses on this screen.
Examples of changes that may not be allowed in MyUI even if it is still open.
Special permission required to register for a course - Contact the instructor or the department for permission. If approved and special permission is entered in the system, student should be able to register for the course while MyUI is open.
Excess hours registration - Student is registered for the maximum credit hours allowed and cannot add any additional hours. If student does not plan to drop any hours, but still needs to add hours, they must appeal at their collegiate dean's office. If approved and permission for excess hours is entered in the system, student should be able to register for additional hours up to the approved number while MyUI is open.
Student athletes dropping a course - Once a semester or session has begun, student athletes need an additional permission to drop or decrease credit hours in a course even if MyUI is still open. When the student clicks on drop they will be given instructions to contact their Athletic Academic Coordinator, (319 335-9384), for the additional permission. A Change of Registration form with Athletics signature is another way for student athletes to drop while MyUI is open. The form must be submitted to the UI Service Center.
International Students dropping a course - Once a semester or session has begun, international students need an additional permission to drop or decrease credit hours in a course even if MyUI is still open. When the student clicks on drop they will be given instructions on how to obtain the additional permission from ISSS. A Change of Registration form with a signature from ISSS is another way for international students to drop while MyUI is open. The form must be submitted to the UI Service Center.
When initial registrations, adds, section changes, and/or hours changes cannot be processed in MyUI, they must be processed through the UI Service Center. The course deadline look-up provides course specific deadlines. Drops can now be processed online throughout the semester or session but a change of registration form can still be used to drop when MyUI is closed.
