URGENT - OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS:
We strongly encourage you to request a PDF electronic transcript whenever possible.
We will process secure PDF electronic transcripts each business day. Paper transcripts are sent (Federal Express or US Postal Service) twice weekly, typically on Mondays and Thursdays.
An official transcript is a certified record of the academic work done at the University of Iowa. It includes classes taken, hours earned, grades received and degrees conferred. Many colleges require that transcripts sent to the student be in a sealed envelope with a signature across the flap from the sending institution. If you need to have your transcript sent to you in this manner, please indicate this at the time of your request. Official transcripts from the University of Iowa are not sent in a signature stamped envelope unless so requested. We send your complete, entire record unless you request a partial record, split by level of study (undergraduate, graduate, professional). If you were in a joint or combined program, we cannot separate level of study. Please note: End of Semester Grades are posted approximately 5 business days after the last day of finals and Degree Notations are posted approximately 10 business days after the last day of finals. Please select the appropriate timing on your request.
The Registrar's Office does not provide unofficial transcripts. If you are a current student you may obtain a semester grade report on MyUI. Grade reports are rarely accepted by prospective employers or other schools in place of official transcripts.
Using MyUI (Iowa's student portal)
Former and current students may use MyUI to place their transcript requests, using their HawkID and password. Requests placed on MyUI by 11:59 p.m. are processed the next business day. If you have let your Hawk ID password expire, please call the ITS Help Desk at 319-384-4357 to get it reset.
You can check your own MyUI request history - Student Records>Transcript Request>upper right hand corner is Transcript Request History. This history only shows requests placed via MyUI, not by correspondence or in-person. Processed = Sent on the date shown.
If you are/were a University of Iowa student and sending the transcript to yourself at your University of Iowa email address, please read these instructions:
University of Iowa email address formatting is: first name-last name @ uiowa.edu
OR HawkID @ iowa.uiowa.edu (without the spaces before & after the @ sign)
If formatted as HawkID @ uiowa.edu - it is undeliverable!
Not using MyUI
You may prefer to place your request through the online form (survey). This request may be used by any Iowa student as well as students from defunct (closed) institutions. These requests may take up to two business days to process. For non-University of Iowa students, you will be sent a bill to your current residing address.
You may come to the UI Service Center which is located in Room 2700 UCC (University Capitol Centre). Office hours are: 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Please bring one form of photo I.D. with you to place your order if taking the transcript with you; bring all mailing/address information if the transcript will be sent by our office to the destination.
You may print, complete and submit the Transcript Request Form. Once we receive a transcript request, it takes 1-2 business days to process and it will be sent out by USPS unless Federal Express is requested alternatively (no PO Box addresses for FedEx). If a fax (unofficial) is requested, we mail (USPS) the official. We process transcript requests without payment. If you are a current student, charges will be billed to your U-bill. If you are a former student or a student from a defunct (closed) college, a bill will be sent to your current residing address. Former students of closed/defunct institutions need to use the correspondence method. The University of Iowa is the custodial institution of defunct post-secondary schools. Here is a list of the schools we have as well as other historic information on closed schools.
If you are transferring TO the University of Iowa, the Office of Admissions needs to receive your incoming transcripts.
Effective July 5, 2016, secure delivery of University of Iowa transcripts are available to send electronically. If you have a form that needs to accompany your transcript, we still require a delivery method of paper.
Please allow a minimum of one business day for the delivery of the electronic transcript. Recipients will receive an email for retrieval of the transcript and the student will receive an email when the pdf has been opened. Deliveries are valid for 30 calendar days OR 20 viewings.
Secure pdf transcripts are official only to the recipient. There are no markings or seal on the pdf to indicate it is a University of Iowa transcript. If you need to upload the record for an application, you will need to obtain an official paper transcript to scan and maintain yourself. If you are in the Iowa City area, our office is open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays. Go to the UI Service Center at 2700 UCC (University Capitol Centre), with photo identification, and you can walk out with your transcript.
At this time, we are unable to send electronic transcripts for students of closed (defunct) institutions that the University of Iowa maintains. If your school is closed, please submit a mailing address for delivery of the paper official transcript.
University of Iowa transcripts processed on or after August 1, 2016 are free.
For non-University of Iowa (closed/defunct schools) records, the following fees are assessed: transcripts are $16 per copy, fax delivery is $7 per transmission, and Federal Express delivery as indicated below. Charges are automatically billed through the University Billing Office. Payments can be made only by check or money order.
We still charge for Federal Express delivery method and charges are automatically billed through the University Billing Office.
Domestic Fed Ex - Next Business Day - $15 domestic shipping fee
International Fed Ex - International Priority - $45 international shipping fee
No transcript is issued for persons whose University account has a financial delinquency (indebtedness) through the University Billing Office.
