Students enrolled at the University of Iowa are assessed tuition based on their program of study. Most students are also assessed mandatory fees that help pay for the facilities and services available to them. Mandatory fees are not based on an individual’s use of facilities or services. The list below describes the various mandatory fees in effect for UI students. Following the description of each mandatory fee is a list of student categories that are exempt from that particular fee.

Technology Fee
The technology fee supports instructional computing demands by providing financial support to improve the quality and quantity of student computing resources (facilities, equipment, and services) and library and other information sources.
Exempt:

- High school students enrolled under the Post-Secondary Enrollment Options Act (PSEOA) or Project Lead the Way
- Students enrolled only in workshop(s) (WK* section)
- Graduate students with a qualifying research or teaching assistant appointment (quarter-time or greater)
- Graduate students with a qualifying graduate fellowship (does not apply to traineeships)
Student Activity, Student Services, Student Union Fees
The student activity, student services, and student union fees provide funding to support the multitude of activities (student organizations/activities; partnership of student governments) and services (Cambus/Bionic Bus; Daily Iowan) available to UI students, both on and off campus.

Building Fee
The building fee contributes to funding for certain construction projects on the UI campus.

Recreation Facility Fee
The recreation facility fee supports the operation and maintenance of Recreational Services facilities on the UI campus, including the new Campus Recreation and Wellness Center (CRWC), as well as programmatic offerings of Recreational Services. The establishment of the fee was essential for the construction of the CRWC and is used to help pay the debt service on the facility. Beginning with the fall 2010 semester, a Recreational Services membership is required to access all recreation facilities on campus, including the CRWC, Field House, Hawkeye Tennis & Recreation Complex (HTRC), Fitness East and Recreation Building. A Recreational Services membership is included in the recreation fee. Once inside the facilities, most activities, including swimming, fitness, rock climbing, racquetball, basketball, volleyball, and Group Exercise classes are included with the membership. Beyond access to all recreation facilities on campus, members also receive discounts on program registration (including Lesson Programs, Rowing, Tennis Programs, Aquatics and Adventure Trips), and reduced tennis court fees.

Arts and Cultural Events Fee
The arts and cultural events fee supports cultural events and performances on campus that are free to students. The fee also subsidizes some of the cost of student admission to any ticketed event produced by Performing Arts at Iowa. (Students are admitted at a reduced price.)

Career Services Fee (Updated Fall 2024)
The career services fee is assessed to undergraduate UI students. The University of Iowa Pomerantz Career Center is a world-class facility with a national reputation for excellence. The Center directly serves more than 20,000 students from all undergraduate colleges. The services provided are centralized and comprehensive. Programs and services focus on student college and post-graduation success, such as career coaching, employer connections, fairs and events, student employment best practices, experiential education, and academic courses on career and leadership topics For more information, visit the Career Center web site.

Student Health Fee
Beginning with the fall 2022 semester, the Student Health fee will be pro-rated to students similar to the other mandatory fees.
The Health Fee ensures student access to essential health services, public health initiatives on campus, and promotes wellness including one-on-one consultants, group workshops, and events. It provides funding for office visits with a healthcare provider for student illnesses or injuries at no cost. Charges for labs, immunizations, physicals, procedures (such as wart removal), and other services can be submitted to patient’s health insurance.

Mental Health Fee
Beginning with the fall 2022 semester, the Mental Health fee will be pro-rated to students similar to the other mandatory fees.
The mental health fee, combine with other resources by the university, will support an increase in the number of licensed counselors serving UI students. Creating a safer and healthier living and learning environment by working to address mental health issues is key to the mission of the University. Adding additional counselors will enhance student access to mental health care services and is a top priority for UI student government.

IMU Facilities Fee (New Fall 2023)
The IMU facilities fee will support the improvement and renovation of the Iowa Memorial Union for the benefit of all UI students. A major component of the renovation will be the construction of the new Wellbeing Center which will relocate Student Health, University Counseling, and Student Wellness into the Iowa Memorial Union. Student mental health and well-being are priorities of both the University and UI student government.

Professional Enhancement Fee
The professional enhancement fee is charged to all enrolled students enrolled in the Graduate College. The Graduate College offers many professional enhancement opportunities, including: Professional Development Workshops/Programs; Scholarly Integrity; Sponsored Programs – Grant Writing; and the Jakobsen Conference/Forum.

Location Mandatory Fee Appeal Form
Students who are residing outside Johnson County may request a reduction in those Mandatory Fees that are classified as Location Fees. These fees are Student Health Service, Mental Health, Student Activity, Student Services, Student Union, Arts and Cultural Events, and Recreation Facility fees. No other mandatory fees are appealable.
Students will need to verify that they are not residing in Johnson County in the session they are appealing and that they will not be on campus at any time during the session. Students will need to attach documentation on the appeal form to verify where they will be residing during the session.
