Commencement

An optional event during which students are invited to wear formal dress and mark their academic accomplishments. Often referred to as “graduation ceremony”, but does not have a direct role in degree conferral.

Curricular College

Organizational college responsible for curricular decisions related to the department offering the program of study (for example, course offerings, faculty assignment, etc.).

Degree Application

The process by which a student indicates their intent to complete degree requirements and have their degree conferred.

Degree Conferral

The process of the University awarding degrees to students who have met all requirements for respective programs of study. Does not require participation in a commencement ceremony.

Diploma

A document typically awarded 6-8 weeks after degree conferral

Discussion

An instructional unit used in conjunction with a lecture that denotes a non-laboratory situation. This term must be used to include all instructional units whose description could be categorized as recitation, conference, or drill (e.g., Lec AAA with Dis A01, Dis A02).

Drop

To unenroll from a course but to remain enrolled in at least one other course in a session.

Dropping

Lab

An instructional unit used in conjunction with a lecture that requires a room with specialized facilities and equipment (e.g., Lab A01, Lab A02, Lab B01, Lab B02).

Lecture

An instructional unit used in conjunction with one or more other types of instructional units that bring together a group as a single unit for a given class meeting (e.g., Lec AAA, Lec BBB).

MyUI

MyUI website will provide convenient gateway to key student systems and services and will serve as a hub for students to access several of the UI systems and tools they use most.

One-Click

A One-Click course combination seat reservation allows student to enroll in a given set of course sections. Typically they are used for students attending Orientation.

Program College

Organizational college responsible for granting academic objective for the program of study.  Student admission, tuition/fee assessment, and degree audits will be based on the program college.

Reserved Seat

Seats held aside by a Seat Reservation.

Restriction

A restriction is used to limit the type of student enrolling in a section. For example, a restricted to majors restriction would allow only a student majoring in the academic unit offering the course.

Seat Reservation

Based on a restriction, which can be separate from the overall section restriction, the seat reservation holds a set number of seats within a section.

Section

A stand-alone instructional unit used to divide a course. A section appears as a numeric or alpha designation (e.g., Sec 001, Sec 002, etc.).

Transcript

A formal, secure document that reflects a student’s academic record and will only show degree notation after a degree has been conferred. 

Withdraw

To unenroll from all courses in a session (even if enrolled in only one course).
