Applying for Degree
Students should submit a degree application for the session in which all requirements will be met. Degrees are conferred during the session that all coursework is completed with the exception of students completing coursework over the Winter session. Students satisfying degree requirements during the Winter session will have degrees conferred after the subsequent Spring session.
Degree Application Information
Students are encouraged to meet with their advisors before completing a degree application to ensure appropriate timing. Students apply for degree via the MyUI student portal. Log in with your HawkID and password. Under the "Student Information" heading, click on the "Degrees / Graduation" button. Students may apply for the current session or the session immediately following. A Degree Application must be filed for a student to be considered eligible for degree. The University of Iowa does not confer degrees without a complete application.
Application deadlines can be found on the Academic Calendar.
After Applying for a Degree
A confirmation email will be sent to degree applicants via University email verifying the University of Iowa's receipt of the application. It is important that students read this email carefully, as it will contain important deadlines and other information for degree candidates. Students filing for future sessions will receive a confirmation email immediately, but no further information will be sent until the application session has begun. If a student has applied and does not receive a confirmation email, they should contact Degree Services for verification.
Degree Services staff will perform a final review of all College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, College of Nursing, College of Public Health, Tippie College of Business, and University College degree applicant records. Students will be notified via University email when this review has been completed.
Late Fee Notice
A late fee of $20 will be assessed for students applying after the deadline. Please see the Academic Deadlines to ensure timely submission of Degree Applications.
Students who file a Degree Application but do not graduate must file a new application for the session in which they plan to complete requirements. Any applicable late fees will be assessed for the new application.
Degree Application Self-Cancel
If your plans change and you will no longer graduate in the session for which you applied, you need to cancel your degree application. Students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, College of Education, College of Engineering, College of Nursing, Tippie College of Business, University College, and Graduate College can request cancellation of a degree application using the Self-Cancel a Degree Application form. Students whose college does not use this form should contact their advisor or collegiate office for assistance.
Communication
Degree Services primary mode of communication with students is through University of Iowa email. Emails are periodically sent beginning when the degree application is submitted. It is important to continue checking UI email until at least 8 weeks after graduation to ensure all communications related to degree conferrals and receiving diplomas have been received.
Please Note: If a student emails questions to Degree Services, staff will not communicate with students using non-UI email addresses unless the alternate email address is noted in the student record. Please visit the ITS website to learn about changing an email routing address and other information concerning UI email after graduation.
