Students who have no holds or restrictions may add/drop, section, and hours change courses through MyUI. If a change is not allowed, the deadline may have passed and student may need to submit a Change of Registration Form with required signatures to the Registrar's Service Center.

Academic deadline dates apply to fall and spring semester-length courses, summer regular session courses, and winter full session courses.

Course deadline look-up gives specific deadlines for any one course, including off-cycle courses.

Initial Registration (adding your first course for the semester/session)

Fall/Spring semester

Students may initial register (add their first course) through MyUI before the semester begins and up until 11:59 pm the night before the 6th day of the semester. If your initial registration is an off cycle course you may add it in MyUI up until 11:59 pm the night before the start date of the course.  Once the initial registration is not allowed on MyUI then a Change of Registration form is required with signatures. Summer/Winter session

Students may initial register (add their first course) through MyUI before the session begins. If your initial registration is an off cycle course or for a sub-session in summer that has not started, students may add it on MyUI up until 11:59 pm the night before the start date of the course. Once the start date has occurred, for any course, an initial registration, add, or change is not allowed on MyUI. A  Change of Registration form is required with signatures. Late Registration fee of $100 will be assessed if you initial register after Day 10 of any course.

Add courses, Section change and Hours change

Fall/Spring semester

Students may add, section change, and/or hours change semester-length courses through MyUI before the semester begins and up until 11:59 pm the night before the 6th day of the semester. Students may add off-cycle courses on MyUI up until 11:59 pm the night before the start date of the course.

After MyUI closes for online changes, or when changes are not allowed on MyUI, a Change of Registration Form with required signatures must be processed through the Registrar's Service Center.  For required signatures please see Changes in Registration - MyUI Closed.

Summer/Winter session

Students may add, section change, and/or hours change courses through MyUI up until 11:59 pm the night before the start date of the session. Students may add off-cycle courses on MyUI up until 11:59 pm the night before the start date of the course.

Once the start date has occurred for any course, adds, section changes and/or hours changes are not allowed on MyUI. A  Change of Registration form is required with signatures. For required signatures please see Changes in Registration - MyUI Closed.

Drop courses

Fall/Spring semester

Students may drop semester-length courses through MyUI before the semester begins and up until 11:59 pm the night before the 6th day of the semester. Students are not able to remove their last course once the session has begun, this is considered a withdrawal of registration. Students may drop off-cycle courses on MyUI up until 11:59 pm the night before the start date of the course.

Student athletes - Once a semester or session has begun, student athletes need an additional permission to drop a course even if MyUI is still open. When the student clicks on drop they will be given instructions to contact their Athletic Academic Coordinator, (319 335-9384), for the additional permission. Once the permission has been given the student will receive an email message letting them know to log into MyUI and process the drop.

A Change of Registration form with only the Athletics signature is another way for student athletes to drop before Day 6 of the fall or spring semester while MyUI is still open. The form must be submitted to the Registrar's Service Center for processing.

International Students - Once fall or spring semester has begun, international students need an additional permission to drop a course even if MyUI is still open. When the student clicks on drop they will be given instructions on how to obtain the additional permission from ISSS. Once the permission has been entered the student will receive an email message letting them know to log into MyUI and process the drop. This permission is not required in Summer or Winter sessions.

A Change of Registration form with only a signature from ISSS is another way for international students to drop before Day 6 of the fall or spring semester while MyUI is still open. The form must be submitted to the Registrar's Service Center for processing.

Summer/Winter session

Students may drop semester-length courses through MyUI before the semester begins and up until 11:59 pm the night before the 1st day of the session. Students may drop off-cycle courses on MyUI up until 11:59 pm the night before the start date of the course.

MyUI will remain Open for Drops through the last day of the semester/session.

Removing all courses from your schedule (even if only registered for one course) is considered a withdrawal of registration. Please see withdraw website for instructions on how to proceed.

Beginning the 6th day of the fall/spring semester or the 1st day of summer/winter session when MyUI has closed for changes in registration students may still drop courses by obtaining required permissions.

To drop online the student should:

  • Log-in to MyUI
  • Click on Courses/Registration in the yellow banner or on the Courses/Registration tile below
  • Click the drop link next to the course you wish to drop.
  • Read the message and click continue if you wish to proceed
  • Read and follow instructions regarding required permissions needed, warnings, and deadlines.

Required permissions replace the need for a written signature on a change of registration form. Instructor permission is no longer required to drop a course.

  • The student should understand the consequences of this drop. If not they should contact their advisor.
  • Once consequences are understood click the green button and proceed with obtaining the required permissions.
  • Students may check back as often as they need (click drop link again) to see which permissions have been obtained and if any are still needed.
  • Once all permissions have been obtained the student will receive an email and MyUI message letting them know they can process the drop.
  • Log-in and click on drop link, read and understand warnings, consequences, and deadlines
  • Click green drop button
  • Course will be removed from your registration

Deadline Days - 4:30 pm is the cut-off time for obtaining any permissions on deadline days. The student has until 11:59 pm to process the drop in MyUI if they have obtained all required permissions by 4:30 pm. The Course Deadline look-up provides course specific deadlines.

It will be the student’s responsibility to obtain the required permissions and to understand any consequences that may happen by processing the drop. Information regarding permissions and consequences will be posted on MyUI but the student should contact their advisor with any questions.

A Change of Registration Form with required signatures may be still be used to drop. The form must be processed through the Registrar's Service Center. The form would be a good option if a student needs to process a drop and add at the same time to avoid going below full-time or to avoid needed approval for excess hours. Instructor signature is no longer required to drop but is still required to add, section change and/or hours change. MyUI will close for drops at 11:59 pm the last day of the semester/session.

This online option to drop is not available for a semester/session that has ended.
