Evening Midterm Exam Assignments
An evening midterm exam is an assessment given at any point between the start and end of an academic term for courses that require examinations outside of their regularly scheduled class hours. A midterm exam aims to evaluate students' understanding and retention of the material covered up to that point in the course. There is no specific week for evening midterm exams – they can occur at any point during the academic term within the approved exam periods set by the Office of the Registrar.
Instructions
Academic department administrators (ADAs) submit evening midterm exam needs on behalf of each department. Instructions on how to submit evening midterm exam assignments needs are found on the MAUI Help website. Submitting evening midterm exam information by the posted date ensures exams are posted to MAUI and MyUI in time for Early Registration. Classroom Scheduling will continue to schedule evening midterm exams beyond the suggested date.
Examination Periods
Instructors may choose either a 1.5-hour or 2-hour time period. Evening exams needing less than 1.5 hours or more than 2 hours will be scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
The approved evening midterm exam time periods are:
- 6:30–8 p.m.
- 6:30–8:30 p.m.
- 8:45–10:15 p.m.
Evening Midterm Exam Scheduling Policies
Scheduling Priority
Evening midterm exams will be scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. However, if there is a conflict, priority will be given to large core undergraduate courses with established examination scheduling policies. Classroom Scheduling will consult with the appropriate associate deans to determine date and classroom priority when necessary.
Classroom Needs
All requests for university classroom accommodations will be fulfilled based on available resources. Requests will be accommodated as fully as possible, using the fewest number of rooms and keeping them close together. When requesting double seating (two seats per student), please note that multiple classrooms may be assigned due to the seating capacities of available university classrooms.
To assist faculty with exam arrangements, university classrooms with a seating capacity of 100 or more have been outfitted with seat and row number identifications. Seating layout plans for these rooms are available on the University Classrooms website. Some faculty have successfully used these layouts to create assigned seating charts for their exams, allowing for single seating.
Special classroom needs for evening midterm exams can be included in the request. This includes preferences such as open-book exams requiring table and chair seating, or the assignment of a department room for the exam.
Requests for specific university classrooms will only be considered if specialized equipment is required, such as TILE classroom usage.
Extended Time Requests
Evening midterm exam or evening midterm make-up exam requests longer than two hours will require approval from the departmental executive officer (DEO) and dean's office. Approval should be emailed to reg-exams@uiowa.edu prior to any scheduling request. Exams lasting more than two hours will begin at 6:30 p.m.
Non-Standardized Periods for Evening Exam Requests
If an evening exam period outside of the approved examination periods for evening exam times is requested, approval from the departmental executive officer (DEO) and dean's office is required. Approval should be emailed to reg-exams@uiowa.edu prior to any scheduling request.
