Preparing for Registration

Registering for classes involves selecting and enrolling in classes you plan to take for the upcoming semester. This process is important to ensure you're meeting your degree requirements and staying on track for graduation. Registering for classes each semester usually includes the following steps.

  1. Take Care of Registration Holds
Registration holds prohibit you from registering for classes until you take action to resolve the hold. Most holds can be taken care of via MyUI. To check for registration holds, log in to MyUI and navigate to the courses/registration tab. Any holds will be displayed at the top of the screen. Questions about holds should be directed to the office that placed the hold.
  2. Plan Your Schedule
Before registration opens, you should plan your schedule. You can use registration tools in MyUI, such as Sample Plans, MyPlan, and Schedule Builder, to help you select your classes. Review the course numbering system in the General Catalog and ensure you meet the prerequisite(s) of the classes you plan to enroll in. Understanding your enrollment status is an important part of the planning process because it impacts your financial aid eligibility and tuition and fees, among other things.
  3. Meet with your Academic Advisor
It's important to meet with your academic advisor to ensure your course selections align with your academic goals and degree requirements. Some students are required to meet with their advisor each semester before enrolling.
Not sure who your advisor is? Find instructions on how to find your advisor through the Academic Advising Center. New and transfer undergraduate students will meet their advisors at Orientation.
  4. Register Online
Your first enrollment of the semester is called Initial Registration. The date and time you are eligible to register for the upcoming semester is based on several factors. Current students generally register during Early Registration, while new and transfer students register during Orientation
You can register for classes using Schedule Builder or Course Search in MyUI. If you need to change your schedule after you register, use the resources on the Registration Changes page to help. If a class you want to enroll in is full and has an available waitlist, you can add yourself to the waitlist.
  5. Be Aware of Important Deadlines
The Academic Calendar includes the important dates and deadlines throughout the academic year, including start and end dates; registration periods, such as the last day to register, drop, or withdraw; and holidays, breaks, and exam periods. You can also use the Course Deadline tool for specific deadlines for any one course, including off-cycle courses.

Academic Advising

It's always recommended to meet with your academic advisor before registering.

Check Dates and Deadlines

The academic calendar contains many dates that are important to registration.

Initial Registration

Enrolling in your first class in any given semester is Initial Registration. All students must have appropriate admission to the University of Iowa and be clear of registration holds to register in any session. You may complete Initial Registration through MyUI before the semester begins and up to 11:59 p.m. CST the night before the sixth day of the semester. If your Initial Registration is an off-cycle course, you may enroll via MyUI up to 11:59 p.m. CST the night before the start date of the course.

Initial Registration by Student Type

Current Students

If you have taken classes at the University of Iowa within the last year, you are considered a current student. If you last attended more than one year ago, or if you earned a degree in your last session attended, you will need to contact the Office of Admissions for re-admission.

Eligibility

To be eligible to register, you must:

  • Have a registration date and time assigned to you in MyUI. Refer to Early Registration for more information about your date and time assignment.
  • Be clear of any registration holds.
  • U-Bill must not be past due.

Advising

Every University of Iowa student is assigned an academic advisor to assist with educational planning and registration. You will need to be authorized to register by your advisor. This may require a meeting with your academic advisor, or it may happen automatically. Consult your department or college for their advising policies and dates.

  • Students advised in the Academic Advising Center (AAC) typically meet with their advisor twice each semester. AAC-advised students are required to meet with their academic advisor before they will be authorized to register.
  • Students admitted to the Tippie College of Business are not required to meet with an advisor prior to registration.
  • Undergraduate Continuing Education students taking only courses or workshops offered through Distance and Online Education are not required to meet with an advisor prior to registration.

New and Transfer Students

If you have never taken classes at the University of Iowa, you are considered a new student. If you have taken college classes at another institution, but have never taken classes at the University of Iowa, you are considered a transfer student.

Eligibility

To be considered eligible to register, you must:

  • Have appropriate admission to the University of Iowa.
  • New undergraduate students will register during Orientation. Undergraduate students enrolling for their first semester as degree‑seeking students are required to attend an orientation program.
    • If you are a new student who is not required to attend Orientation, check for a registration date and time in MyUI under the Home tab.
    • Graduate and professional students should contact their department with registration questions.
  • Be clear of any registration holds.
  • U-Bill must not be past due.
  • Have your transfer credits submitted to Admissions. The Office of the Registrar does not evaluate transfer credits.

Advising

Every University of Iowa student is assigned an academic advisor to assist with educational planning and registration.

  • Undergraduate students enrolling for their first semester as degree‑seeking students will meet their advisor at their orientation program.
  • New students not required to attend an orientation program should meet with their advisor to select courses and obtain permission to register. A meeting with your academic advisor or your academic advising office is an important part of the registration process. You must consult your department or college for their advising dates.
  • Students advised by the Academic Advising Center are encouraged to meet with their advisor for a planning appointment prior to their registration time.
  • Students admitted to the Tippie College of Business are not required to meet with their advisor prior to registration.
  • Undergraduate Continuing Education students taking only courses or workshops offered through Distance and Online Education are not required to meet with their advisor prior to registration.

Returning/Re-Entering Students

Students who earned a degree in their last session of attendance, or who have been absent from the university for 12 months or longer, need to apply for re-entry through the Office of Admissions.

Students absent from the University of Iowa for less than 12 months, who did not earn a degree in their last session of attendance, and do not have a registration day and time assigned, should contact Registrar Services to have a registration date assigned.

International students need to contact International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) regardless of the length of their absence.

MyUI Registration Tools

You will use MyUI, the University of Iowa's student portal, to enroll in classes. There are two registration tools available in MyUI that can be used based on your needs: Schedule Builder and Course Search.

Registration with Schedule Builder

Schedule Builder is a web-based schedule planner that allows you to generate multiple schedule options within minutes. You must be logged into MyUI to access the Schedule Builder functions.

With Schedule Builder you can:

  • Generate schedules based on your individual needs.
  • Exclude or include courses/sections.
  • Block time out for practice, club meetings, work, etc.
  • Choose location and/or delivery mode.
  • Add your favorite schedules to “preferred schedules” to review the schedules at a later date.

Schedule Builder Registration

When you are permitted to register, you may return to Schedule Builder to review your saved schedules and register for classes.

Make sure to select the upcoming session for which you wish to build schedules.

Schedule Builder does not replace all functions found within the courses/registration area in MyUI we recommend reviewing the Schedule Builder help page to determine which process works best for you.

Registration with Course Search

The Course Search feature in MyUI is a searchable online list of courses available for multiple sessions and is available to the public without a HawkID login required. Course Search can be found in the courses/registration tab of MyUI. Course Search provides additional filter options not available in Schedule Builder. You can also enroll in classes one-by-one and make registration changes using Course Search.

Course Search Registration

Course Search Registration is available once you have been cleared for registration and the session is open for enrollment.

When using Course Search, make sure to select the appropriate session in the upper-right corner.

Course Search Registration by Section Type

Register for Stand-Alone Section

A stand-alone section does not have any additional section types (i.e., labs or discussions) associated with it. To enroll in a stand-alone section:

  • Search for courses in MyUI to find sections to enroll in.
  • Only open sections will have the enroll button available.
    • The enroll button for registering can be found on the course browse results page or the section detail on an individual section.
  • After the enroll button is selected, MyUI will display the option to add the section to a schedule or cancel the enrollment process for that section.
  • Once the add button has been selected, the following message will appear in MyUI indicating the registration was successful: Successfully registered for SUBJ:CRSE:SECT.
  • Check your schedule to confirm selection.
Register for Lecture with Mandatory Lab or Discussion

In course sections with mandatory relationships, students choose a discussion or lab section and are automatically registered for the lecture that is related to that discussion or lab section. To register for mandatory related sections:

  • Browse or search for courses on MyUI to find sections to enroll in.
  • Only open sections with the credit hours assigned will have the enroll button available.
    • The related lecture will not have the enroll button, but will instead have the statement: This section is automatically added.
  • After the enroll button is selected, MyUI will display the option to add the section to a schedule, or cancel the enrollment process for that section.
  • Once the add button has been selected the following message will appear in MyUI if registration was successful: Successfully registered for SUBJ:CRSE:SECT.
    •  The lecture will be automatically added to the schedule once the related lab or discussion is chosen.
  • The lecture and lab or discussion will be added to the course schedule.
  • Check your schedule to confirm selection.
Register for Lecture with Preferred Lab and/or Discussion

In courses with preferred relationships, students must choose both a lecture and a lab or discussion. Credit hours in preferred relationships are placed on the lecture sections. To register for preferred relationships sections:

  • Browse or search for courses on MyUI to find sections to enroll in.
  • Only open sections will have the enroll button available.
  • The related lecture, lab, and discussion sections will each have the enroll button but will also include a statement with what other sections need to be selected. (i.e., choose one discussion, one lecture when registering; or choose one lab, one discussion when registering).
  • After the enroll button is selected for the first section, MyUI will display the ability to select the other lecture, lab, or discussion options.
  • When all options are selected, the add or cancel button must be clicked to complete or cancel the process.
  • Once the add button has been selected, then the following message will appear in MyUI if registration was successful: Successfully registered for SUBJ:CRSE:SECT.
  • All selected sections will be added to the course schedule.
  • Check your schedule to confirm selection.
Register for Independent Study Course

Independent study is an individual instruction section that is not a formally structured class. Typically, this involves one-on-one instruction with a specific faculty member and student. Independent study sections always end in IND (e.g. ABC:1234:0IND). To register for an independent study section:

  • Browse or search for courses on MyUI to find sections to enroll in.
  • Only open sections will have the enroll button available.
  • Once the enroll button is clicked there will be a list of available instructors to choose from. Arrangements with faculty about the nature of the independent study should be established before enrolling.
  • After the instructor is selected the section will appear on the course schedule.
  • Check your schedule to confirm selection.
Add to a Waitlist

If a course is full (and the department offers a waitlist), there will be an option to join the waitlist. You can add yourself to a waitlist as long as you meet course prerequisites and restrictions. For instructions on how to add yourself to a waitlist and information on waitlist processes, please visit the waitlist page.

Audit a Course (Enroll for 0 s.h.)

Auditing a course means taking a course without earning credit (0 s.h.). A grade of AUS (audit successful) or AUU (audit unsuccessful) will be assessed. Audited courses do not meet degree requirements, do not impact GPA, and carry no credit toward graduation. However, you are still responsible for the tuition and fees associated with the class.

You may change your registration from credit to audit (or vice versa), but only during the period when adding courses is allowed. For semester-length courses, a change from credit to audit is allowed only during the first 10 days of the fall or spring semester. For off-cycle or summer courses, the date varies. The change to audit must be completed by the last day for undergraduates to add or change to P-N or audit status and late register as listed on the Academic Calendar for semester-length courses, or the last day to add without collegiate approval listed on the Course Deadlines page for an individual course.

To audit a course, you must first enroll in the course and then complete an hours change to 0 s.h. Auditing a course requires approval from the course instructor and your academic advisor.
