Midterm Exams
If a course has an evening midterm exam scheduled outside of regular class time, it will be listed in MyUI.
Instructions to Access Midterm Exam Schedule
Students may access their evening midterm exam schedules with their course schedules in MyUI.
- Log in to MyUI.
- Under Student Information click on the More box.
- Select Course Schedule.
- Exams will display under the time/location column AND the calendar below under "Midterm Exams."
Only midterm exam information for course sections with evening midterm assignments scheduled through the Office of the Registrar will appear on a student's individual schedule. Midterms held during class time are typically not displayed in MyUI.
Midterm Exam Schedule Publication
Evening midterm exams may be listed in MyUI as soon as early course registration, but they can still be added or updated at any point throughout the semester. Instructors are encouraged to communicate exam dates to students as soon as possible.
Exam Conflicts
Qualified Exam Conflicts
Qualified exam conflicts are situations that guarantee eligibility for a make-up exam.
Final Exam Make-up Qualifications
Students who have one of the two exam situations below qualify for a make-up exam from their instructors.
- Two or more final exams/assessments scheduled for the same exam period (direct).
- More than two final exams/assessments scheduled for the same day (greater than two exams per day). This does not include multiple exams within a 24-hour period.
The Final Exam Assignments page in MyUI will specify which course has the qualified conflict requiring a make-up exam. This is the instructor who will offer the make-up exam in cooperation with their students to schedule.
Midterm or During Term Exam Make-up Qualifications
When instructors plan to give exams outside of regular class time and meeting locations, they should announce the dates and times and/or list them on the course syllabus. MyUI will list Evening Midterm exams on the student schedule.
Students should contact their instructors as soon as possible when there is a conflict between:
- An exam scheduled outside of regular class time and a regularly scheduled course, the regularly scheduled course will take precedence.
- An exam scheduled outside of class time and other scheduled and required course activities (e.g., performances, meetings, lectures), the required course activity will take precedence.
- An exam scheduled outside of class time and other scheduled, non-required course activities or personal obligations, the exam will take precedence. However, exams not scheduled and announced in class at least 14 days in advance will not have priority under this policy.
- Two or more exams scheduled outside their regular class times at overlapping time periods, the instructor must follow make-up exam precedence rules when assigning the make-up exam.
Instructors must offer reasonable options without penalty to students who miss exams due to the conflicts described above.
Make-Up Exam Requests
Students are responsible for contacting their course instructor directly to arrange make-up exams in case of conflicts. Only qualified exam conflicts, as listed above, are guaranteed a make-up exam. For guidance on which instructor to contact based on exam precedence, refer to the Qualified Exam Conflicts section above.
For other conflicts, students should contact their instructor promptly. Instructors may offer a make-up exam at their discretion, unless restricted by college or department policies.
Note: The Office of the Registrar does not manage make-up exams.
Exam FAQs
What should I do if I need special accommodations for an exam?
Students should speak with their instructors to arrange special accommodations for exams. For questions about the types of accommodations available (i.e., extended time, reduced distraction, etc.), students can work with the Student Disability Services Office (SDS). For SDS Exam Services-related inquiries, please contact sds-exams@uiowa.edu or visit the Student Disability Services website.
Will all of my courses have a final exam?
Not all course sections are given final exam assignments by the Office of the Registrar. Only final exam information for course sections given final exam date assignments by the Office of the Registrar will appear on a student's individual final exam schedule. Some courses give alternative assessments such as a final paper, presentation, project, or another cumulative activity appropriate to the discipline and the course.
Professional colleges (i.e., Carver College of Medicine and the Colleges of Dentistry, Law, and Pharmacy) do not follow the final exam schedule created by the Office of the Registrar.
