Withdrawal After the Session Begins

If you decide to drop all of your courses after a session has started—even if you're only enrolled in one—you must complete a Withdrawal of Registration.

  • A withdrawal removes all courses in the current session, including any that have ended and may already be graded.
  • You will not be able to register for other courses in the same session or any sub-session, even if they haven’t started yet.
  • For summer sessions, a withdrawal applies to all sub-sessions. For example, withdrawing from the 4-week sub-session means you cannot enroll in any other summer sub-session.

Once processed:

  • You’ll be removed from all active waitlists for the session.
  • You cannot re-enroll unless you’re readmitted.
  • The withdrawal will be recorded on your academic record.

If you want to stay enrolled but switch courses, make sure to add at least one new course before dropping others.

Refer to the Academic Calendar or use the Course Deadlines tool for withdrawal deadlines.

Reminder

Once you complete your withdrawal, you cannot re-register for the current session. If you wish to stay enrolled, cancel the pending withdrawal and use the Change in Registration process to adjust your courses.

Withdrawing from the current session does not affect your future session enrollments. Those registrations will remain unless you make changes. If you do not plan to attend a future session, please drop those courses in MyUI.

Initiate Withdrawal in MyUI

The withdrawal process should be initiated in MyUI.

Note: Professional MBA students should review program-specific instructions.

Advisors

Contact your advisor if you have questions or concerns about your decision to withdraw.

Tuition Responsibilities

You will be responsible for a portion of assessed tuition and fees based on the date of your withdrawal. More information is available about the drop or withdrawal tuition responsibility.

Additional Withdrawal Information

If you have a financial aid award, there may be additional adjustments to your tuition assessment for a withdrawal. It may take 4–6 weeks for your withdrawal information and U-Bill to be finalized. Please contact the Office of Student Financial Aid at 2400 University Capitol Centre (UCC) or financial-aid@uiowa.edu or 319-335-1450 if you have questions.

A withdrawal is not in effect until it has been completed in MyUI and you receive the message in the green banner. If your withdrawal is not able to be processed in MyUI and it is done administratively through Registrar Services, you will receive an email when it is complete.

Your tuition and fees assessment page in MyUI will adjust immediately based on registrar deadlines. To review your tuition and fees page in MyUI, click on Financial Aid & Billing in the yellow banner. Under the Finances & Billing heading, click on Tuition & Fees.

For deadline dates to withdraw and the percentage of tuition that may be refunded, review the Academic Calendar on the Office of the Registrar's website and Withdrawal Tuition Responsibility.
