Frequently Asked Questions

How can I access my final exam schedule?

Once the official final exam schedule has been published, students may access their individual final exam schedules through MyUI.

When is the final exam schedule published?

The final exam schedules for fall and spring semesters are published the fifth week of the semester. The final exam schedule for summer session is published on the first day of summer classes.

Until the final examination schedule has been published and all makeup final examination arrangements have been completed by faculty, students should be prepared to be on campus until the last exam period of final exam week/day.

What is considered a qualified exam conflict?

Students who have one of the two exam situations below are eligible for a makeup exam:

  • two or more final exams/assessments scheduled for the same exam period (direct); or
  • more than two final exams/assessments scheduled for the same exam day (>2 day)

Please see this page on policies for makeup exams.

How do I request a makeup final exam?

If you have a qualified exam conflicted listed in MyUI, please reach out to your instructor ASAP.  It is the responsibility of the student to speak directly with their course instructor regarding any qualified final exam conflicts.  Students must register their intent to take a make-up exam with their course instructor by the deadline indicated below:

Fall Semester: October 1

Spring Semester: March 1

Summer Semester: By the end of the first week of the affected course session.

The Final Exam Assignments page in MyUI will specify which course has the qualified conflict. This is the instructor that will offer the makeup exam.  It is up to the instructors of the courses involved to work in cooperation with their students to schedule appropriate makeup final examination arrangements according to the makeup final examination scheduling policies.

What should I do if I have a personal exam conflict?

The Office of the Registrar does not administer makeup examinations. All makeup exams are handled by the instructor/department offering the final exam. If a student has a conflict with an exam, for any reason, they should contact their instructor directly to discuss possible makeup exam options. Under University examination policies, students are permitted to make up exams missed as a result of illness, mandatory religious obligations (in accordance with the University's policy on religious holidays) or other unavoidable circumstances like a death in the immediate family, jury duty, or mandatory military obligations.

Only qualified exam conflicts, as outlined on this page, are guaranteed a makeup final exam. If a student has a conflict with their exam that is not a qualified conflict, we encourage the student to reach out to their instructor to explain the situation. Instructors have autonomy to offer a makeup exam, at their own discretion, unless college or department policies prohibit them from doing so.

What should I do if I need special accommodations for an exam?

Students should speak with their instructors to arrange special accommodations for exams.  For questions about the types of accommodations available (i.e. extended time, reduced distraction, etc.), students can work with the SDS (Student Disability Services) Office.  For SDS Exam Services related inquiries, please contact sds-exams@uiowa.edu
