Fall 2020 Diploma Information Update
Please Note: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Diploma Services must make adjustments to diploma delivery options. See below for Domestic diploma delivery options.
Normal Operations (see below for standard operating procedures)
Diplomas will be printed off-campus and ready to deliver about 6 - 8 weeks after graduation. USPS First Class mail is the default delivery method for domestic diploma delivery. If you live in the United States please choose USPS First Class Mail.
FedEx delivery will not speed up the delivery to a U.S. address. Each delivery is prepared individually on-campus and thus are dispatched over the course of several days. This is why USPS First Class Mail is the recommended mode of delivery to domestic addresses.
To update the Diploma Delivery Address or choose a diploma delivery method, open your degree application in MyUI and click on the (edit) link to the left side of the screen. Scroll down to Diploma Delivery Information. Following the diploma address you will see Delivery Method options.
United States Postal Service (USPS) First Class Mail
USPS First Class Mail works best for domestic delivery. Diplomas for new graduates will be sent out approximately 6 weeks after graduation.
- Advantages of using USPS: Cost; there are no additional fees added to your U-Bill. However, if you provide an incorrect diploma mailing address and your diploma does not arrive, you will be assessed a $10 reissue/re-mailing fee on your U-Bill.
- Disadvantages of using USPS: There are no tracking numbers with USPS First Class Mail.
Student Pick-up or Hold your Diploma
In light of the university's response to COVID-19, Diploma Services and Graduation Services staff are working remotely and are unable to guarantee we will be able to return to campus to facilitate the Student Pick-up option. Therefore, Student Pick up will not be a delivery option for December 2020 diplomas.
If you are unsure of where you will be residing after graduation, choose Student Pick-up, so your diploma will be sent back to our office. You can let us know once you have relocated and updated your Residing Address on MyUI and we will send your diploma to you.
In light of the university's response to COVID-19, Diploma Services and Graduation Services staff are working remotely and are unable to guarantee we will be able to return to campus to process diplomas for FedEx delivery in a timely manner once diplomas have been printed. FedEx delivery may not expedite delivery. Once printed, 6 - 8 weeks after graduation, your diploma will be returned to our office to process for FedEx delivery. Each delivery is prepared individually on-campus and thus are dispatched over the course of several days. This is why USPS First Class Mail is the recommended mode of delivery to domestic addresses.
To request FedEx delivery you may choose FedEx as your Diploma Delivery Method on your degree application on MyUI. Once it is in their possession, Fed Ex will send you an email with a tracking number. Most charges for Fed Ex delivery of December 2020 diplomas will appear on the December 1st U-Bill. *By requesting Fed Ex delivery of your diploma, you agree to pay the Fed Ex fees that will be posted to your U-Bill.
- Advantages of using FedEx: Fast, reliable delivery (1-2 days after FedEx ships) with a tracking number to allow you to track the status of your shipment.
- Disadvantages of using FedEx: Cost; a $15 domestic FedEx fee will be charged to your U-Bill. Fed Ex will not deliver locally, in the Iowa City area, or to a P.O. Box.
It is your responsibility to make sure FedEx can deliver to the address you provide. If your diploma is returned to the UI because it cannot be delivered, the FedEx delivery and return fees will be charged to your U-Bill.
