students should plan to arrive no later than 1:15 p.m. Arriving
earlier will give you a few minutes for photos with family and friends.
Also, there will be less congestion.
What
do I do when I arrive at the ceremony?
You
should arrive at your ceremony with cap and gown in hand – or plan
to pick up previously ordered apparel at the Book Store apparel
table located in Section A (west side) of the upper concourse.
If
you arrive with a coat or purse make arrangements to leave these
items with a family member or friend.
Graduates
are seated by degree being received. Master's candid tes are divided
into alphabetic groups of approximately even numbers. You should
report to the Name Card Hand-Out Table appropriate to your degree.
The tables are situated around the upper concourse. Tell the staff
member your last and first names. The yellow Name Card you completed
when you purchased apparel at the Book Store will be returned to
you at this time.
Doctoral
candidates who will be hooded by an adviser should report to section
NN to pair of with your hooding faculty. Then line up in the
designated doctoral line according to the hooding faculty's last
name (A – L or M – Z). You will participate in the Processional
together and will sit together. Check that your adviser's name is
on the bottom of the card. Hold onto your name cards! If you
do not have a specific faculty present to hood you, there will be
a hooding team on the stage that will hood you when you cross the
stage.
Master's
candidates should join your alphabetic group to line up where signs
indicate. A marshal will be there to direct you. Graduates need
not be in strictly alphabetical order. The Processional will begin.
What
happens at the ceremony?
Your
marshal will escort your group to a designated seating area. You
should sit down as soon as you reach your chair. A Graduate
College program and a general University booklet listing all graduates
will be on the chair.
A
Welcome address, the Charge to the Graduates, music and The Conferring
of Degrees will follow.
For
the Presentation of Graduates, the candidates will be invited to
come to the stage to be recognized individually. You will need to
take your Name Card with you.
Doctoral
candidates will hand the Name Card to the person reading names at
the microphone. After your name is read, walk to the designated
spot near the podium to be hooded by your adviser or members of
the Graduate faculty. After the hooding, proceed across the stage
to shake hands with the University officials. Following the posed
photo taken as you exit the stage, you and your adviser will return
to the opposite end of your original row of seats, cross to your
seat and be seated. NOTE: If your faculty advisor
will be hooding more than one student, it will be necessary for
your advisor in consultation with his advisees to predetermine where
you will collectively assemble prior to processing down to the floor
of Carver Hawkeye Arena for the commencement ceremony.
Master's
candidates will hand the card to the person reading names at the
microphone and walk briskly to center stage to shake hands with
the University officials. Following the posed photo taken as you
exit the stage, you will return to the opposite end of your original
row of seats, cross to your seat and be seated.
Following
