Registration Changes in MyUI

New for spring 2024 - Section changes and hours changes can be processed in MyUI throughout the session.

Click on the registration change below to see what permissions are required. Initiate and complete your change in MyUI if possible.

If MyUI will not allow the change then use the email option

Initial Registration

Initial Registration (adding your first course for the semester/session) 

Fall/Spring Semester

Students who have been authorized by their advisor may initial register (add their first course) through MyUI before the semester begins and up to 11:59 p.m. the night before the sixth day of the semester. If your initial registration is an off-cycle course, you may add it in MyUI up until 11:59 p.m. the night before the start date of the course. 

Beginning Day 6 of Spring or Fall, day one of Summer or Winter or day one of any off cycle course, please use the "initiate add" request in course browse of MyUI, follow the steps in MyUI and obtain the required permissions/authorizations.

Required permissions to initial register (add your first course): Advisor and instructor. Advisor permission is not required for students who are admitted to the Tippie College of Business. 

After last day to add without collegiate approval, students must also obtain appropriate collegiate permission. The course deadline look-up provides course specific deadlines.

  • Undergraduates: Degree- and nondegree-seeking students need collegiate approval from the college that the course is offered in. Each course description in MyUI lists the college the course is offered through.  
  • Graduates: Degree- and nondegree-seeking students need approval of the Graduate College.
  • Professional: Need approval of the college student is enrolled in.

Add a Course

MyUI remains Open for Adds through the last day of the semester/session.

Beginning the 6th day of the fall/spring semester, the 1st day of summer/winter session, or the 1st day of any off-cycle course that begins within the regular session, please use the "initiate add" request in course browse of MyUI, follow the steps in MyUI and obtain the required permissions/authorizations.

Add a Course - Written Steps Only

  1. Log-in to MyUI
  2. Click on Courses/Registration in the yellow banner
  3. Select Current Session 
  4. Click on Add Course link (above your schedule)
  5. Browse for course, click Initiate Add Request 
  6. Review permissions required and click Continue 
  7. Review acknowledgments (deadlines and warnings)
  8. Click I agree to obtain required permissions
    • Some courses will require students to select related sections
    • Student must complete all steps before the add will be initiated
  9. Once steps are completed Click Go back to Dashboard
  10. Contact each permission needed
  11. After the last permission is authorized online, the student will receive an email and MyUI message letting them know they have 24 hours to process the add
    • Only one set of messages will be sent at the beginning of the 24-hour time period. Multiple messages will not be sent during those 24 hours as is the case with waitlist offers 
  12. Click Complete Add in MyUI, review warning, Click Continue, Click Add  
    • Student will see message that they have successfully added the course
    • Student can cancel during any step or remove pending add if they no longer need to add the course.

Required Permissions to Add

Distance and Online Education

Courses ending in 0EX are offered through Distance and Online Education. You will use the same process as noted above for your 0EX registration changes. Drop a Course

Drop Courses 

Are you wanting to remove all your courses? Removing all courses from your schedule (even if only registered for one course) is considered a withdrawal of registration. Please see withdraw information for instructions on how to proceed. If you are just dropping one or some of your courses please follow the process below.

Beginning the 6th day of the fall/spring semester or the 1st day of the summer/winter session students may still drop courses online by obtaining required permissions. 

To drop a course via MyUI the student should:

Log-in to MyUI

  • Click on Courses/Registration in the yellow banner or on the Courses/Registration tile below
  • Click the drop link next to the course you wish to drop.
  • Read the message and click continue if you wish to proceed
  • Read and follow instructions regarding required permissions needed, warnings, and deadlines.

Required permissions replace the need for a written signature. Instructor permission is not required to drop a course.

  • The student should understand the consequences of this drop and discuss with their advisor.
  • Once consequences are understood click the blue button and proceed with obtaining the required permissions.
  • Students may check back as often as they need (click drop link again) to see which permissions have been obtained and if any are still needed.
  • Once all permissions have been obtained the student will receive an email and MyUI message letting them know they can process the drop.
  • Log-in and click on drop link, review and understand warnings, consequences, and deadlines
  • Click green drop button
  • Course will be removed from your registration

Deadline Days - 4:30 pm is the cut-off time for obtaining any permissions on deadline days. The student has until 11:59 pm to process the drop in MyUI if they have obtained all required permissions by 4:30 pm. The Course Deadline look-up provides course specific deadlines.

It is the student’s responsibility to obtain the required permissions and to understand any consequences that may happen by processing the drop. Information regarding permissions and consequences will be posted on MyUI but the student should contact their advisor with any questions.

Additional permission required for International students – ISSS permission is required to drop a course if it has begun regardless of the start date of the course. 

Additional permission required for Athletes – Athletics permission required from your Athletic Academic Coordinator, (319 335-9384), to drop a course in any semester or any session that has begun regardless of the start date of the course.

MyUI will close for drops at 11:59 pm the last day of the semester/session.

This online option to drop is not available for a semester/session that has ended.

Section Change

Section Change

Staying in the same course for the same number of credit hours but changing the day/time and or instructor you will be enrolled with.

Section Change Deadlines/Timelines

Beginning the 6th day of the fall/spring semester, the 1st day of summer/winter session, or the 1st day of any off-cycle course that begins within the regular session you can still use MyUI to make section changes. Please use MyUI to request a change of section. Follow the steps in MyUI and obtain the required permissions/authorizations. If change is for a semester/session that has ended, please begin the process at your Collegiate office.

If section change is not allowed in MyUI then the student should use the email option.

Section Change - Written Steps Only

  1. Log-in to MyUI
  2. Click on Courses/Registration in the yellow banner
  3. Select Current Session
  4. Click on the Change link located to the right of the course for which you wish to request a section change, then click Change Section
  5. Select the radio button to the left of the desired section, scroll down if needed and
  6. Agree to obtain required authorizations (permissions)
  7. Contact each permission needed
  8. After the last permission is authorized, the student receives an email letting them know they can return to MyUI to complete the section change
    1. Student Returns to Courses/Registration page and clicks "Complete Section Change" link to the right of the course.
      1. Review warning, click Continue, Click Complete Section Change.
    2. Student sees message that they have successfully completed the section change
  9. If the section change is Denied, student receives and email letting them know why their request was denied and whom they should contact with questions

Permissions Required for Section Changes

The instructor of the new section must give permission. No other permissions are required as long as the change is processed before semester/session has ended.

If student is also making an hours change in combination with the section change, additional permissions are required. See “Section and Hours change.

Hours Change - Increase Hours

Increasing Hours

Staying in the same course with the same instructor and same section but increasing the number of credit hours you are registered for. The course must already be set up to be offered for the increased hours.

Students may change their hours before day six of fall and spring, before day one of summer and winter, and before day one of any off cycle course using MyUI. Log in, click on Registration, and choose the session. Each of your courses will have a change/drop link to the far right.

Increasing hours after last day to add without collegiate approval, students must also obtain appropriate collegiate permission. The course deadline look-up provides course specific deadlines.

  • Graduates: Degree- and nondegree-seeking students need collegiate approval from the Graduate College.

Hours Change - Decrease Hours

Decreasing hours (except to zero or audit)

Staying in the same course with the same instructor and same section but decreasing the number of credit hours you are registered for. The course must already be set up to be offered for the decreased hours.

Students may change their hours before day six of fall and spring, before day one of summer and winter, and before day one of any off cycle course using MyUI. Log in, click on Registration, and choose the session. Each of your courses will have a change/drop link to the far right.

Semester/session has ended - If change is for a semester/session that has ended, please begin the process at your Collegiate Dean’s office.

Hours Change - Audit Course

Reduced Credit Tuition - Information for tuition and fee assessment for audits.

Staying in the same course with the same instructor and same section but decreasing credit hours to zero (audit). You will still be assessed tuition for auditing a course. Please be sure you have discussed with the instructor what work you will be responsible for if you are approved for an audit.

Beginning the 6th day of the fall/spring semester, the 1st day of summer/winter session, or the 1st day of any off-cycle course that begins within the regular session, please use MyUI to request a change of hours to audit. Follow the steps in MyUI and obtain the required permissions/authorizations

Each of your courses will have a change/drop link to the far right. Once a session begins or once an off-cycle course begins if an hours change to audit (zero) is not possible in MyUI then it can be processed using the email option from your uiowa.edu email address to registrar@uiowa.edu.

Required permissions for hours change - decreasing hours to zero for an audit: Advisor and instructor. Advisor signature is not required for students who are admitted to the Tippie College of Business after their first year.

  • Undergraduates – Collegiate permission is required after last day to add without collegiate approval. The course deadline look-up provides course specific deadlines. 
    • Undergraduates: Degree- and nondegree-seeking students need collegiate approval from the college that the course is offered in. Each course description in MyUI lists the college the course is offered through.
  • Graduates and Professional students - Collegiate permission is required after last day to add without collegiate approval. The course deadline look-up provides course specific deadlines. 
    • Graduates: Degree- and nondegree-seeking students need collegiate approval from the Graduate College.

Change Hours and Course Section

Hours and Section Change 

If student needs to remain in an enrolled course, but increase or decrease credit hours for that course and also change the meeting time or the instructor for that course, the student should request both a section and an hours change. Permissions needed should follow those for an hours change.

The course deadline look-up provides course specific deadlines.

If hours change is not allowed in MyUI then the student should use the email option and obtain required permissions.
